Based in Bloomington, Indiana, the Mary Janes are fronted by Janas Hoyt. Janas is best known for her early 90's stint in the Vulgar Boatmen as well as her recent studio work with the John Mellencamp band.
1999 saw the debut release of the Mary Janes, Record No. 1, and the band's brand of Amer-indie roots rock has been met with much acclaim. Critics across the country from Seattle to Austin, Chicago to New York have praised the music as smart, compelling and emotionally afire.
At the heart of the Mary Janes sound lies a studied bed of rhythm and melody, with Hoyt's vocals centered amidst lush counterpoint string arrangements reminiscent of John Cale-era Velvet Underground.
The band's live show is equally engaging. Logging over 100 dates in 1999 to support the release of Record No. 1, the Mary Janes have begun to gain regional as well as national recognition from fans, radio and press alike.
